Farmers Choice
Elgin Valley Farms – Farmers Choice chickens are raised on RSPCA Certified farms. These farms conform to over 350 requirements as outlined in the detailed RSPCA Australia Standard for Meat Chickens; each one focused on providing a better quality of life for the birds.
For ongoing improvement, the standard is reviewed every 5 years to keep up with modern science and innovation. To ensure ongoing conformance, the farms are assessed two to four times per year by specially trained RSPCA Assessors, and, as a humane death is also important abattoirs are assessed annually.
Farms are monitored continuously for air quality and have natural light cycles for the bird’s wellbeing. They are assessed by specially trained RSPCA Assessors two to four times per year to ensure ongoing conformance to the standard.
These farms rear their birds in barns, with perches for improved leg health, dry, friable litter for scratching and dustbathing, and interesting objects to peck at – all things that come naturally to a chicken.
Free Range
These farms provide their birds with access to an outdoor range, shade to protect them from the elements, and space to explore during the day.
At night the meat chickens have shelter and protection inside a large barn, with more space to move, perch, dustbathe and forage than legally required.
Even though it’s not the easiest way, it’s important in raising meat chickens to a higher-welfare standard. Elgin Valley Farms – Free Range chicken is available at independent supermarkets, BBQ shops and butchers.
Ready to shape the future of higher-welfare farming?
Layer hens raised by producers with RSPCA Certification have nests, perches, litter to dust bathe and enough space to move. The Standard allows for indoor and outdoor housing that provide the hen with opportunities to perform natural behaviours.
