Why RSPCA Certified?

The RSPCA is one of Australia’s largest and most trusted charities and has been engaging with Australian Farming Sectors for over 100 years to improve the lives of farmed animals.

RSPCA Australia standards are credible

Developed by the RSPCA Australia Science Team, the Standards focus on providing better welfare for animals in medium to large-scale farming systems.

The Standards are reviewed approximately every five years and involve a comprehensive review of the animal welfare literature and extensive stakeholder consultation, all with the aim of lifting the bar for farm animal welfare.

We have a robust certification process

Aligned with ISO/IEC 17065, the certification process is multi-layered including review and evaluation prior to certification being granted.

Once certification is achieved, the ongoing process for all RSPCA Certified farms and abattoirs includes regular on-site assessments. Conducted by the RSPCA Certification Body, assessments comprise site visits and oversight of all handling and processes involving animals and are performed during both scheduled and unannounced assessments. For traceability purposes, all businesses that handle RSPCA Certified products for Licensees must demonstrate conformance with the requirements of the RSPCA Certified Chain of Custody Standard through a Chain of Custody assessment.

We value working together

We recognise that working collaboratively with industry and forward-thinking producers is an effective way to drive improvement for farm animals.

We also know that featuring a trusted animal welfare certification logo on products, is the clearest way to communicate to consumers that a product has come from animals raised with higher-welfare conditions.

Our work is not without challenges, but we persist and continue with our mission because it’s the right thing to do for animals and importantly, is supported by those who work with us and believe in farming to a higher-welfare standard.

Chickens on RSPCA Certified farms are encouraged to be active with space to move, litter for scratching and dust bathing, and access to perches.

RSPCA Assessors

In accordance with auditor competence described by ISO/IEC 19011:2018, RSPCA Certified-authorised Assessors possess specific knowledge and competencies and have the skills necessary to achieve the objectives of assessments. Trained to conduct assessment of RSPCA Certified Programs, they regularly participate in on-going professional development specific to the RSPCA Certified Program and farming sector.
