Rohde’s have been producing free-range eggs for more than 50 years, in the pristine rural surrounds of Tarlee, 80 kilometres north of Adelaide on the southern edge of the Clare Valley.

Second-generation farmers John and Ange Rohde were early adopters of the RSPCA Standard for Layer Hens and have maintained certification for over 20 years. With around 115,000 hens roaming their free-range farm, the Rohde family continues to lead the way in higher-welfare, free-range egg production in South Australia.

Rohde’s Free Range Eggs achieved certification in 2005, when the program was called the ‘RSPCA Accreditation Scheme

Transparency is at the heart of Rohde’s philosophy. The farm has always been open to visitors wanting to see how the hens live. “We’re very open and honest; we have visitors. If you’re paying a premium, you should know what you’re getting. I don’t believe consumers should be misled,” says John Rohde. This commitment to openness reflects their long-standing dedication to doing the right thing for their hens, customers, and community.

“Our mission is to produce tasty and ethically farmed eggs from the happiest chickens. Being an RSPCA Certified farm for over 20 years highlights the importance we place on animal welfare and also ensures our standards are the best in the industry.”

John & Ange Rohde Rohde’s Free Range Eggs

In 2025, the Rohde family achieved an incredible milestone: the 20th anniversary of certification for Rohde’s Free Range Egg Farms. Two decades of ongoing certification is a remarkable achievement and a reflection of Rohde’s commitment to higher-welfare farming. Their dedication to providing hens with the freedom, space and care they deserve has made a real difference, not only for the birds on their farm, but also for egg consumers who value knowing where their food comes from.

Their certification during this time has helped us promote and advocate for a better quality of life for layer Hens, and the statistics speak for themselves. When Rohde’s first achieved certification, 66% of consumers were concerned about battery cages, and in 2025, 95% of consumers supported a phase-out of battery cages and a transition to higher-welfare requirements for layer hens. Rohde’s has been a pioneer brand for this increase in consumer awareness for the welfare of layer hens.

Rohde’s continues to lead by example, proving that raising hens to higher-welfare standards is not only achievable but sustainable. Hen welfare remains at the heart of their business, with our certification providing the trusted third-party assurance their customers expect. Looking ahead, Rohde’s remains dedicated to setting the benchmark for responsible, transparent, and higher-welfare egg farming in Australia.
