Australia’s largest integrated poultry producer making a difference
Inghams Group Limited was founded as a family business in 1918 in NSW, expanded by the second generation and is now the largest integrated poultry producer across Australia and New Zealand. The current day business continues to build on Inghams’ proud history of quality and customer service, supplying major retailers, quick service restaurant operators, food service distributors and wholesalers.
“As a veterinarian, I am a passionate advocate for ensuring our birds are cared for to a higher standard of welfare, and I believe that RSPCA Certified has helped our business to drive continuous improvement of the welfare of our birds.”
Dr Andrew Walsh – General Manager of Technical Services, Veterinary Health and Welfare at Inghams.
Prioritising animal welfare
Animal welfare and sustainability remain top priorities for Inghams, illustrated by the commitment of the business to higher welfare farming. Aligning the business with organisations whose key focus is on animal welfare, Inghams is proud to be RSPCA Certified. This means that meat chickens on Inghams’ farms are reared with a focus on welfare throughout their lifecycle, well beyond what’s legally required in Australia.
Working closely with their customers and RSPCA Certified, Inghams has worked hard to modify systems and transition farms to meet the RSPCA’s Standard for meat chickens. 100% of Inghams’ meat chickens have been RSPCA Certified to indoor raised requirements since 2014, and now 100% of our free-range operations are also assessed and certified to the outdoors requirements of the RSPCA Australia Standard.
Making a substantial impact
As Australia’s largest integrated producer, Inghams is making a tangible impact on the welfare of meat chickens at significant scale.
The RSPCA Standard for Meat Chickens focuses on providing an environment where birds can carry out natural behaviours with lower stocking densities, litter for scratching and dust bathing, access to perches, lighting to encourage activity, and a period of darkness to rest properly – all of which go well beyond legal requirements. Meaning that for businesses operating at scale, like Inghams, they help to improve the lives of millions of animals.
