In 2014, Coles made the landmark move, becoming the first Australian supermarket to source RSPCA Certified chicken for all their own brand fresh chicken, launching a transformation in Australian meat chicken production resulting in industry wide change for meat chicken welfare.
Farms that are certified, RSPCA Certified provide their meat chickens with environments the meet their behavioural and physical needs. These farms are assessed to the RSPCA’s detailed Standard for meat chickens, 2-4 times per year by specially trained RSPCA Assessors. Range is available nationally.

Coles Free-Range Pork
Coles source free-range RSPCA Approved Pork from pig farms in Western Australia.
These farms are certified RSPCA Approved and assessed 2 times a year by specially trained RSPCA Assessors. On free-range pig farms that have RSPCA Approved certification, pigs have outdoor access year-round with comfortable lying areas that are sheltered from the elements and have quality bedding.
Sows (mother pigs) have a secluded place to build a nest for her young when she is ready to give birth. Breeding pigs on these farms also have access to wallows which is an important form of enrichment.
Along with this, pigs on these farms are never kept in cages or crates of any kind and are not subjected to painful husbandry procedures, such as teeth clipping, tail docking, or surgical castration.
With over 300 requirements, the RSPCA’s Standard for Pigs aims to provide a quality environment whether this is indoor, outdoor bred or free-range.

Coles Finest Free-Range Turkey products use RSPCA Approved turkey.
Coles sources turkey for its Coles Finest Free-Range Turkey products from RSPCA Approved farms in NSW’s Hunter Valley. On these farms, turkeys have space to move and access to the outdoors. Turkeys also enjoy perches, straw and other items to keep them active, engaged and comfortable when inside the barn.

Coles source their Coles Brand fresh turkeys from RSPCA Approved farms across Australia. On these farms, birds are provided with more space and better lighting inside a cosy barn. Turkeys also enjoy perches and toys to keep them active and entertained.

Ready to shape the future of higher-welfare farming?
Layer hens raised by producers with RSPCA Certification have nests, perches, litter to dust bathe and enough space to move. The Standard allows for indoor and outdoor housing that provide the hen with opportunities to perform natural behaviours.
